Sony's Potential PS5 Successor: Rumors of a New Handheld Console Emergent
Sep-13-2024
Recent developments suggest that a new handheld console from PlayStation may be in the works. Earlier this year, a video by YouTuber Tom, known as Moore's Law Is Dead, revealed specifications for the PS5 Pro. Initially, these revelations faced skepticism regarding their reliability. However, with Sony's official confirmation of these specs, the validity of the YouTuber's other assertions about an upcoming handheld device gains traction.
In his video, Tom asserted that Sony is collaborating with AMD to create this new handheld, that could function as a successor to the PS Vita. While this information slipped under the radar when first announced in March, it has resurfaced in light of Sony's recent PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation.
At the time of his initial remarks, Tom indicated that the handheld had not yet received approval for production, implying it could be abandoned before any public unveiling. He suggested that the console was in the 'High-Level Design' phase, indicating that Sony is still evaluating its potential look and features, and that there is no certainty regarding its release timeline. Tom mentioned it could take at least two years before a launch might occur.
Furthermore, Tom revealed discussions with developers who indicated that the handheld could have 18 Compute Units, allowing it to run digital PS4 titles, akin to the Steam Deck. It might even be capable of playing some PS5 games if a suitable patch were provided.
While Sony has not officially unveiled any plans for a device to succeed the Vita, it has confirmed that the PS5 Pro is set planned for an international debut on November 7, 2024, along with pre-orders commencing on September 26.
